During the last 10 years, ScanTech scientists and engineers have been perfecting scanning technology to determine both the mass density and the effective atomic weight of any substance passing through the scanner. In layman's term, the technology is smart enough to differentiate between two clear liquids such as water and vodka – or more importantly, nitroglycerin. From there, the ScanTech system can decide whether to allow the item to pass or fail the scan. And the best news for the homeland security folks is the scanning technology can be applied at both the bag and shipping container level.
